What is Medicare Part A?

Medicare Part A is hospital insurance provided by the federal government. It helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.

Most people don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. However, there are out-of-pocket costs you should be aware of:

2026 Part A costs

Deductible: $1,736 for each inpatient hospital benefit period.

Inpatient hospital coinsurance:

  • Days 1–60: $0 per day after the deductible
  • Days 61–90: $434 per day
  • Days 91–150: $868 per lifetime reserve day
  • After day 150: all costs

Skilled nursing facility coinsurance: $0 for days 1–20, $217 per day for days 21–100, and all costs after day 100 when Medicare requirements are met.

Amounts shown are for 2026 and can change annually. Verify current Medicare costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Medicare Part A always free?

Original Medicare generally does not cover ongoing custodial long-term care. Coverage depends on the care setting and current Medicare rules.

What types of care can Part A help cover?

Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital care, limited skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health services when Medicare requirements are met.

Can I pay the Part A deductible more than once in a year?

Yes. The Part A deductible applies to each inpatient hospital benefit period, and there is no annual limit on the number of benefit periods.
